The best branding agencies in San Francisco for most buyers are Clay (brand plus digital), Manual (startup and refresh work), Wolff Olins and Siegel+Gale (large, multi-business-unit brands), and Elixir Design (mission-driven and cultural organisations). All nine firms below list a San Francisco street address on their own website, which we checked on 1 November 2026.
That address check matters more than it should. Many "San Francisco" branding lists include firms based in Daly City, San Rafael or Larkspur, and Pentagram, often listed as an SF firm, names only London, New York, Austin and Berlin as offices on its own about page. The lists that rank highest are often written by agencies that put themselves first: Awesomic's San Francisco list says "We're first" (Awesomic, 24 Aug 2026).
Order follows our published criteria 1 to 7, scored from each firm's public site: relevant work, case-study detail, who does the work, service fit, process, pricing transparency and a verified SF office. We have not been paid by any firm here. Pick by the Best for line, not by rank alone.

How to choose between branding agencies in San Francisco
Rank is a starting point. Fit decides the hire. Use this short guide to cut the list to three.
| If you need… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Brand and website from one team | Clay, Play Studio |
| A startup identity or a refresh | Manual, Office, Noise 13 |
| A rebrand after a merger, spin-off or rename | Siegel+Gale |
| A brand system across business units or countries | Wolff Olins |
| A cultural or non-profit identity | Elixir Design |
| Packaging and physical brand applications | Hybrid Design |
Then email each of your three the same one-page brief and compare their replies. Our list of questions to ask a design agency gives you what to ask on the first call, and the design agency selection criteria scorecard turns the answers into a decision.
What these agencies cost
None of these agencies publishes prices on its own website. The figures below come from their profiles on Clutch, a B2B directory, checked on 2 November 2026. Clutch figures are bands the agency chose when it filled in its profile, not quotes, and Clutch earns money from agency sponsorship. We only use a profile that has client reviews or whose address matches the agency’s own site.
| Agency | Price signal | Basis | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clay | $50k+ min · $150–$199/hr | Clutch, 32 reviews | profile |
| Manual | Not published | Clutch profile shows no price | – |
| Wolff Olins | Not published | Clutch profile unreviewed, no SF address: not used | – |
| Siegel+Gale | Not published | Clutch profile unreviewed, outdated address: not used | – |
| Elixir Design | $10k+ min · $150–$199/hr | Clutch, 0 reviews | profile |
| Play Studio | Not published | No directory profile found | – |
| Office | Not published | No directory profile found | – |
| Hybrid Design | $10k+ min · $150–$199/hr | Clutch, 0 reviews | profile |
| Noise 13 | $50k+ min · $200–$300/hr | Clutch, 10 reviews | profile |
Use these as a first filter, not a budget. A minimum project size tells you where an agency starts; most brand, web or product projects at these firms cost several times the minimum. Get a written estimate against the same brief from each finalist. Our guide to design agency selection criteria explains how to compare them.
Firms we excluded, and why
We left these firms out because their own websites did not give a San Francisco office when we checked (16 October 2026, from our research file). Some are excellent; they are just not in San Francisco.
| Firm | Office shown on its own site |
|---|---|
| Pentagram | London, New York, Austin, Berlin (pentagram.com/about) |
| Mortar | Daly City |
| iBelieveInSwordfish | San Rafael |
| Good Stuff Partners | Larkspur |
Firms we are still verifying
These firms say they work in San Francisco but do not publish a street address. They will join the ranking once we confirm the office.
- Born & Bred lists San Francisco among five cities and is unusually open on budget: its contact form offers bands from $25,000–$50,000 up to more than $200,000, with project or retainer options (bornandbredbrand.com, checked 1 Nov 2026). Clients named include Discord and Grammarly.
- Theory SF lists positioning, messaging, category creation and identity, with case studies for Airbase and Backblaze (theorysf.com). Strong on B2B.
- Lippincott lists San Francisco among its offices but no street address on the page we checked.
What to check before you shortlist a branding agency
Look for the problem, not just the logo. A good branding case study says what was wrong before, what the agency’s role was and what changed after. Our guide to reading a design agency portfolio has an eight-point check.
Ask who will do the work. At larger firms the pitch team and the delivery team can differ. Get names in the proposal.
Match the agency’s size to yours. The founder of TinyPilot warned against being a vendor’s “smallest client” after a branding and website project went from an estimated $7k to $46k (TinyPilot blog, July 2022). A global consultancy is the wrong fit for a 10-person company, and a two-person studio may struggle with a 20-brand portfolio.
Decide whether you also need a website. If yes, a firm that builds (Clay, Play Studio) avoids a handoff. If not, a brand-only studio is often sharper. See our list of web design agencies in San Francisco if you need a separate build partner.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a branding agency in San Francisco cost?
Not on their own sites. On Clutch (checked 2 Nov 2026), Clay and Noise 13 list a $50,000+ minimum project (Noise 13 at $200 to $300 an hour), and Elixir Design and Hybrid Design list $10,000+ at $150 to $199 an hour. Born & Bred, not ranked yet, publishes bands from $25,000 to over $200,000 on its contact form.
What is the difference between a branding agency and a design agency?
A branding agency focuses on strategy, naming, identity and guidelines. A design agency may also do websites, product interfaces and campaigns. Many firms do both, so check which services have recent, detailed case studies.
Why is Pentagram not on this list?
Pentagram's own about page lists offices in London, New York, Austin and Berlin, not San Francisco. We only include firms with a verified San Francisco office.
Do agencies pay to be on this list?
No. No agency pays to be listed or ranked, and we have no affiliate links.
